Fun Things To Do In The New River Gorge

Vacation is supposed to be fun right? To quote Elvis (well, sort of), “If you're looking for fun, well, you came to the right place.” The New River Gorge has been dishing out fun for years and it just keeps getting better here. Whitewater rafting, rock climbing, hiking, and biking have been part of many New River Gorge vacations for quite some time. But over the last few years, a host of new, fun activities have popped up. Here are just a few of those new, fun things you can do in the New River Gorge.

Timbertrek

Whether you are a world-class athlete or just an average Joe who likes a challenge, Timbertrek, Adventures On The Gorge's new aerial obstacle course, has something for every type of fun seeker.

What is a “Timbertrek” you ask? Good question. In a nutshell, it’s a 4-acre aerial obstacle course. Well, 5 courses, actually, and they all vary in degrees of difficulty. Timbertrek is a self-guided adventure using ropes, wood, and cables to create an obstacle course in the trees. It will definitely test your sense of balance, strength, and agility.

Harnessed for safety, you move at your own pace, working your way around the course for three hours. Kids as young as 7 can participate, but anyone under 14 has to have adult supervision. How far do you think you could make it on the course?

Bridge Walk

The New River Gorge Bridge is a magnificent structure. There’s a festival celebrating its magnificence, for goodness sake. Whether driving across it, standing on it at Bridge Day, or taking it all in from the river below, the Bridge is pretty impressive. But what about venturing onto the 3-foot wide catwalk below, where you have a birdseye view of the Gorge unlike any other?

That’s what you'll get by if you go on Bridge Walk. It's an informative and scenic walk across the New River Gorge Bridge on the walkway that used to be reserved for engineers. With a harness and a guide, you are able to experience the Bridge from underneath its deck. Remember to take a camera. You’ll be able to snap some pretty spectacular photos.

Orb The Gorge

Just a ball’s bounce (no pun intended) from the New River Gorge Bridge is one of the areas newest attractions, The Orb.

Here’s the scoop: you climb into a large, clear plastic ball, and roll almost 500 feet down a hill. There's actually a smaller ball suspended inside the large ball, and you'll be harnessed into that ball. Unless you choose H2Orb, in which case the harness will be substituted for a few gallons of water. Sort of like a cross between a water slide and a washing machine. Either way you're bound to come out grinning. And dizzy.

Here's a quick checklist of other fun things that you can do around the New River Gorge:

  • Zip Lining
  • Rafting, Canoeing, and Kayaking
  • Rock Climbing and Rappelling
  • Stand Up Paddleboarding
  • New River Jetboats and Hawks Nest Tram
