Landmarks (You May Not Have Seen or Been To) Around the New River Gorge

Locals know the New River Gorge Bridge isn’t the only “must see” thing while visiting the New River area. When you talk about the “landmarks” of the area – many names start to arise including Thurmond, Sandstone Falls, and Grandview. But some secondary spots off the tourist beaten path can be just as beautiful. Places like:

Lover’s Leap It’s very fitting that Valentine’s Day is coming up and we’re writing about our own Lover’s Leap. Located in Ansted at Hawk’s Nest State Park, this spot is a great overlook filled with a Native American Romeo & Juliet story.

Kaymoor Hidden down in the gorge is the once thriving coal town of Kaymoor. Long ago a whole town existed here along with the mines that they worked. The mine was in operation from 1903 – 1963 and some of the structures still remain today. To get a good look at Kaymoor, a steep hike is in store down the Kaymoor Trail.

Long Point Want a great view of the bridge? This is it. Long Point offers undoubtedly the best view of the New River Gorge Bridge and is an easy 3.2 mile roundtrip hike. The view is definitely worth the journey.
