Behind-the-scenes: building the New River Gorge Bridge
The Historic Fayette Theater will offer a unique chance to learn about the construction of our iconic bridge after the Bridge Day festival.
Get a look behind the scenes with a screening of the “Iron Men of the Gorge” documentary, then meet the filmmaker and some of the iron workers who helped build the bridge for a Q&A.
“In late 2011 or early 2012 I heard about a 30-year reunion of iron workers at the Bridge Walk,” said Greg Michael of GMP Productions, who created the film. “I thought to myself, ‘those guys must have some great stories to share.’ “
The documentary blends historic footage from the WV Division of Culture & History, personal interviews of the iron workers and video from Bridge Day.
The documentary honors the men who physically built the bridge, including members of the Iron Workers Union Local 301 here in West Virginia, and iron workers from all over the United States working for American Bridge, the company that built the bridge.
The iron workers were a colorful and fearless crew. The work required to build the bridge demanded that they be highly skilled, physically strong and not afraid of heights. The film highlights the dangers and challenges these men faced during construction. The film offers a unique perspective, and includes outstanding before, during and after images and footage of the New River Gorge.
The Historic Fayette Theater in downtown Fayetteville will show "Iron Men of the Gorge" after the Bridge Day festival at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets are $7.50.
Copies of the film will be available for sale at the screening for $25. If you can’t make it to the screening and want to buy the film, contact Greg Michael atcontactus@GMProductionswv.com
