A Holiday Gift Guide for the Adventure Seeker

Monday, November 26th, 2012

Do you have an adrenaline junkie on your shopping list? Someone who is always outdoors looking for that next thrill? If so, finding the perfect holiday gift for them may require thinking outside the box.

But you came to the right place. We have ideas for you, plenty of them.

Electronics

Before all of the great technology we have today, adventure seekers had only memories of their escapades. Today, recording all your fun for posterity is easy with a Sony Action Cam. Waterproof, with a built in stabilization setting to reduce camera shake, it’s designed specifically for adventurers. The Action Cam can tackle any activity a thrill seeker can throw at it, from biking to kayaking or even rappelling. Heck, these cameras made a whole lot of BASE jumps off the Bridge this year.

Give the ultimate extreme gift: a tandem BASE jump!

Apparel

Your adventurer needs the right gear and clothing. Companies like North Face, Patagonia, and Mountain Hardware all make great technical products, like waterproof jackets and pants and insulated clothes for layering. If you’re looking for some great casual clothes that can stand the rigors of the outdoor lifestyle, Mountain Khakis is a great choice and a Bridge Day favorite.

Adventure

Maybe you want to give that special someone a gift that really says “I think you’re crazy, and I like it.” Might we suggest the gift of a tandem jump off the New River Gorge Bridge on Bridge Day? There are only 10 available every year, so it would put your adventurer in “rare air”, no pun intended. It takes over 100 skydives to qualify for a solo BASE jump off the Bridge, but the tandem option is for anyone who meets the safety criteria.

A WOW Gift

We realize that not everyone’s idea of a holiday gift is a car. But if you are looking to give an adventurer a new ride, Subaru vehicles are built for the outdoor lifestyle. All-wheel drive, with accessories to help carry the “toys” of the wild, these cars can get you to just about anywhere fun is happening. Imagine how cool you’d be if the gift you’re giving is in the driveway topped with a big red bow.

What are you giving your adventurer this year?

What Subaru Means To Bridge Day

Wednesday, November 7th, 2012

Have you ever had a good neighbor that is the first to help out anytime you need a hand? Well, that’s what Subaru has become to the Bridge Day festival. Both Subaru Corporate and Hometown Subaru are wonderful neighbors. Their contributions to the event have helped Bridge Day keep getting better every year.

We appreciate the partnership that we have built with both these groups and wanted to take a minute to “toot Subaru’s horn.” No pun intended.

Subaru’s Role

This is the third year Subaru has been involved in Bridge Day. We couldn’t be any happier to have them as a presenting sponsor.

Subaru at Bridge Day 2012

Subaru Corporate was once again “on board” with helping sponsor the BASE jumper rescue boats. This is a crucial role in the day, ensuring the safety of those jumpers who land in the river.

Hometown Subaru is responsible for the Into the Gorge shuttles that allow folks to experience Bridge Day from the bottom of the Gorge. And speaking of shuttles, Hometown Subaru also partners with the Oak Hill Rotary Club on the spectator parking lot shuttles.

Subaru Corporate also sponsors the Tandem BASE Jump Contest, where adventure seekers can compete to win a tandem jump on Bridge Day. Part of that sponsorship includes a $1000 donation to the winner’s specified charity. See what we mean about being a good neighbor?

This year the tandem BASE jump was even more special than usual. The winner, Erika Terranova,  married her fiancé Patrick just before jumping off the Bridge.  Subaru hosted a reception for the newlyweds in their ‘Igloo’ at the top of the Bridge. The Igloo also is the hub for live video of the BASE jumpers.

And perhaps most exciting of all, Subaru Corporate helped sponsor the newly unveiled Bridge Day catapult. A few select BASE jumpers were launched from the catapult this year instead of using the usual platform or diving board. The catapult was immediately a spectator favorite and will be back in 2013.

Thank You

Bridge Day 2012 was a great success, once again. Thank you Subaru, for being such great neighbors and lending so many helping hands to Bridge Day.

Meet Tandem BASE Jump Winner (and Bride-to-be) Erika Terranova

Friday, October 5th, 2012

Last month, you selected our Bridge Day 2012 Tandem BASE Jump Contest winner. Erika Terranova will be taking more than one plunge on October 20. Before she hops off the Bridge with her tandem BASE partner, she’ll tie the knot with skydiving fiance Patrick.

We thought you’d like to learn more about Erika. Heck, we were intrigued ourselves. How many brides do you know that are willing to plummet 876 feet towards a rushing river immediately following their wedding? Read on…

Erika and Patrick

Bridge Day: Where are you from?

Erika: My fiancée and I are both from Lockport, NY

Bridge Day: How did you hear about the tandem BASE jump contest?

Erika: After we had made the decision to get married at Bridge Day we saw the contest posted on Facebook. We both follow Bridge Day on Facebook and knew we could make a unique video so we decided to enter the contest.

Bridge Day: Tell us more about you and your fiance. How did you meet?

Erika: We met through a mutual friend at her birthday party. We have been inseparable since that day!

Patrick had been skydiving for a few years before we met. Eventually he talked me into doing a tandem skydive and I loved it! Shortly after my first jump I started training for my skydiving license but was forced to take a hiatus for the birth of our daughter. There are 3 children in our family: Kaleb is 7, Trent is 3, and our beautiful baby girl is 6 months old!

Bridge Day: How did you decide that a Bridge Day BASE jump wedding was your dream?

Erika: We had planned on doing a skydiving wedding but did not want to wait until I had made enough skydives to jump on my own. I came up with the idea to have the wedding at Bridge Day and Patrick contacted Jason at Vertical Visions to get approval, and the rest is history.

Erika after a skydive

Bridge Day: Tell us about your charity and why you’re supporting it.

Erika: My charity is Mental Health America. The MHA started back in 1909 and are the leading advocacy organization addressing the full spectrum of mental and substance use conditions and their effects nationwide. They work to inform, advocate, and enable access to quality behavioral health services for all Americans.

I chose Mental Health America because I have seen first hand how mental illness and substance abuse affect the quality of life. I have watched friends and family struggle with both issues, I also have lost friends and family members to mental illness and substance issues. People tend to lose hope and think that their life will never be what they want. I want people to know there is help and life can be lived to the fullest!

Bridge Day: What will you wear?

Erika: We will wear matching “Bride” and “Groom” hoodies.

Bridge Day: Where’s the honeymoon?

Erika: Neither of us are in a hurry to leave our 6 month old daughter for a honeymoon right away. So we have decided to postpone the honeymoon until after our family reception that will take place in the summer. The honeymoon is still in the planning stage but we want to go somewhere warm with skydiving!

If you missed seeing Erika’s winning video, never fear. You can watch it now.

After their jump, Erika and Patrick will head back up to the Bridge to the Subaru Igloo. There, Subaru will host a reception for them, complete with cake! Stop by in the morning for your chance to meet the lucky couple.

Will we see you there?

Bridge Day Tips and Tricks for Every Visitor

Wednesday, September 12th, 2012

Are you going to Bridge Day 2012? If so, you will be one of 80,000 people to answer yes to that question. Whether you’ve been before or this will be your first trip, there are a few things that you can do to get the most out of your visit.

Make a Plan

Decide now how you would like to spend Bridge Day, because you have lots of options. Check the Bridge Day website for a schedule of the day’s events. Make an agenda or itinerary for your friends and family so everyone is on the same page. Do some research ahead of time; you can never be too prepared. The Official Bridge Day Appfor your smartphone can help with planning as well.

Get there early and you could be this close

Go Early

Here’s a Bridge Day tip: get there early. The shuttles to the Bridge will be less crowded, as will the Bridge itself. The later it gets the more crowded it becomes. Going early will also allow you to possibly even park close enough to walk if you are up for some exercise that day.

Reserve Your Shuttle Spot

You can reserve a personal shuttle to the bottom of the Gorge by purchasing one of the Glade Springs Down Under Tours. Theses shuttles leave at 8:30 AM and 12:30 PM and are available first come, first served as they fill up. One option would be to spend the morning on the Bridge and the afternoon at the bottom, complete with a bag lunch.

Get a Hometown Subaru Into The Gorge Pass

If you don’t like the idea of being tied to an exact departure time (like the Down Under Tours have), you can purchase a pass for the Hometown Subaru Into The Gorge Shuttles. You need to reserve these in advance and can pick them up at the Bridge Day tent on the south side of the bridge from 9am-1pm. These shuttles begin running at 9:00 AM and will be available every 20 minutes or so.  You can get your pass when you arrive at the Bridge and then take the shuttle whenever you are ready to go to the bottom.

Just remember; the last shuttles out of the Gorge leave at 3:00 PM. That particular shuttle is always crowded, so plan accordingly. For advance reservations call 800-927-0263.

Make Your Purchases Early in the Day

If you are planning on getting a souvenir (the official Bridge Day 2012 T-shirt or poster), you should do it fairly early in the day. These items have sold out before the end of the day. There will be many other vendors with some unique local arts and crafts items that you’ll definitely want to check out.

How do you plan your Bridge Day?

How Do I Get Under the Bridge On Bridge Day?

Monday, August 27th, 2012

Bridge Day is a wonderful way to spend an autumn Saturday in New River Gorge country. But taking in all of the sights and sounds of the festival from the deck of the Bridge is only one way to experience this event. Relaxing on the banks of the New River, under the Bridge, is an option for you.

“How do I get under the Bridge on Bridge Day”, you ask? Read on.

Nice Day for a Hike or Bike

Yes, you can hike or bike down into the Gorge. This is a great option if you want to get some exercise and plan to spend the better part of the day at the bottom. It’s close to 4 miles from Rt. 19 to the Tunney Hunsaker Bridge at the bottom, so plan accordingly. And remember, it’s all uphill on the way out, so pace yourself.

This Could Be Your View

This road will also be used for shuttles and emergency vehicles; you must yield to traffic. Once you are at the river there are designated areas from where you can watch the action. And remember, you cannot get on a shuttle coming out of the Gorge if you hike or bike in.

Into The Gorge Shuttles

If walking it isn’t your style, you’ve got another option: Hometown Subaru Into The Gorge Shuttles. These shuttles make it easy to enjoy both the fun on the Bridge and the beauty underneath. Buses begin running at 9am and will be available approximately every 15-20 minutes until 3 pm.

The shuttles are $20 and you must reserve and pay for your ride prior to Bridge Day. You can then pick up your pass at the Bridge Day tent on the south end of the Bridge. Contact the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce to book your spot.

Glade Springs Down Under Tours

Looking for something a little more personal on Bridge Day? Then the Glade Springs Down Under Tours are just for you. Tours leave at 8:30 am and 12:30 pm; each van will have its own personal guide provided by the New River Junior Woman’s Club. These Tours also include a t-shirt and box lunch for each guest.

Down Under Tours are by reservation only and spaces are limited. The cost is $65; if you are interested in making this journey you can reserve your spot by contacting the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce.

How are you getting under the Bridge this year?

Your Awesome Video + Plenty of Votes = A Tandem BASE Jump at Bridge Day 2012

Tuesday, August 21st, 2012

Have you ever thought, “It would be SO cool to BASE jump off the New River Gorge Bridge”? Well, with a video camera and some creativity, that daydream could be a reality on Bridge Day 2012.

We’re giving away a tandem BASE jump again this year. Additionally, Subaru will donate $1,000 to a charity of your choice. And once again, Bridge Day fans will choose the lucky winner.

Tandem BASE jump at Bridge Day 2011

The Guidelines

The rules of this contest are simple: If you want to enter, create a video showing the world why you should be the one chosen to jump. Be as creative as you can, but please keep your video under 3 minutes in length. Make sure you mention your charity in the video and why you’re willing to jump of the New River Gorge Bridge to support it.

You can submit your tandem BASE jump contest video entry beginning Friday, August 31. All entries must be uploaded to the Bridge Day Facebook page by 12 Midnight on Friday, September 7. Voting begins Saturday, September 8 and will be open until Friday, September 14 at 12 Midnight. The video with the most votes wins, simple as that.  All videos submitted become property of Bridge Day.

Requirements

Before you get busy making the world’s best video, make sure you meet a couple of requirements. First, you must be at least 18 years old.  You must weigh 200 lbs or less and be capable of an active lifestyle. Those restrictions are in place purely for safety.

Also keep in mind that that the winning jumper must wear athletic shoes or hiking boots on the day of the jump, and must sign a waiver of liability. That’s not much to ask for what will surely be the experience of a lifetime, right?

What if I Don’t Win (Or Don’t Make a Video)?

Well, you’re in luck. Vertical Visions is also selling a limited number of tandem BASE jumps for Bridge Day 2012. You can purchase a tandem jump if you feel so inclined!

So get your creative juices flowing and create a video that will wow those Facebook fans. If you do, you just might be jumping off of the New River Gorge Bridge come Bridge Day 2012.
